The Texas Clinical Laboratory Coalition for Quality

What is the TCLCQ?

A coalition of clinical (medical) laboratory professionals concerned about the shortage of qualified, certified laboratory personnel and how this will affect the quality and safety of clinical laboratory testing.

Medical laboratory technicians and technologists (a.k.a., clinical laboratory scientists) are vital members of the health care system. They perform and verify diagnostic tests for heart disease and tumor markers, detect disease causing bacteria and viruses, match blood products for transfusion and organs for transplants.  Some medical technologists perform complex tests on DNA extracted from patients' samples.  Indeed if you or a loved one has been hospitalized or if you had blood drawn during a doctor visit, you have received the services of laboratory professionals.

Contrary to popular belief, Texas laboratory personnel are not licensed by the state or federal government, and Texas laboratories are not required to hire certified laboratory personnel.  Financial pressures on hospitals and laboratories are increasing, when combined with the personnel shortage, this could lead to more of your blood work being performed by non-certified workers.  more>
